The next screening of the Italian Film Club is coming up. On Thursday 17 November we will watch Nanni Loy’s L’audace colpo dei soliti ignoti (1960).
The title of this Italian heist comedy means “Daring Strike by the Usual Unknown Persons” and the movie is a sequel to Mario Monicelli’s masterpiece I soliti ignoti. A year after the failed attempt to steal the contents of the safe in the pawnbroker’s office, the gang get back together to steal the Totocalcio money in Milan.
Despite not being on a par with its predecessor, the film has plenty of humor and engagement and it features first-rate performers from the previous cast including Vittorio Gassman, Renato Salvatori, Claudia Cardinale, and that absolute treasure of a screen presence, Carlo Pisacane. There is also a valuable new entry: Nino Manfredi as Piede Amaro, the ‘car engine wizard’ who is obsessed with his family’s troubles.
I hope to see you there and this time with no technical problems (that, they assured me, have been checked and sorted out)!
